Rudberg Research Collection of the Central New England Railway. Dates: 2002-2010.
Dates: 2002-2010. Quantity: .75 linear feet. Abstract: The collection consists of tour guidebooks compiled by Bernard L. Rudberg of photocopies of photographs, maps, correspondence, and documents related to the history of the Central New England Railway, which ran from Maybrook, New York, to Hartford, Connecticut, in the period between 1898 and 1927, at which point it was taken over by the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. Mr. Rudberg creates the books for the participants of an annual guided bus tour he coordinates, in April or May of each year beginning in 2002, that follows portions of the old railway line, and provides information about the towns on the route, train wrecks that occurred, old carbarns, turntables and roundhouses, and such features as the Poughkeepsie River Bridge. |

This note is for anybody planning to join us for the 2012 version of the CNE Historical tour.
Hi, We are almost a month away from our trip and I am trying to get a feel for our final head count. At this point we have one bus full. If you could let me know if you are going or not going, it would help us greatly to plan our bus and printing needs. We are meeting at the Canaan depot, driving to Norfolks Haystack mountain and Stoney Lonesome, then east to the Whiting arches and furnaces, finishing the morning at the Canaan yards. Will will have lunch at the depot and Pete MacLachlan will show slides and talk about his experiences operating the Lakeville branch and the attempt to keep the branch running. In the afternoon, we will proceed west to State Line and Millerton. We had to pay additional fuel charges last year so we had to increase the fare to $55. thanks, Joe Mato |
| Central New England Railway (CNE) Bus Tour 2012 |
|
This is a heads up for those planning to join us for the 2012
segment of the annual bus tour along various portions of the former
Central New England Railway. The 2012 tour will be on Sunday
April 1st (rain or shine).
We will depart from the parking lot of the train station in Canaan, CT The 2012 tour will cover the CNE between Norfolk, CT and the NY State line at Millerton plus Copake in NY. The exact routing is subject to change if we run into any last minute problems or find a new way to get the buses into a small space. Due to the narrow roads and lack of suitable parking in much of the general area of our tour, some locations can only be shown from the bus or in photographs. We will show you as much as we possibly can. As usual, everybody will get a copy of the 2012 CNE Tour guide book. We have a lot of ground to cover so we will have coffee and buses will roll at 9:00. The cost of this year's tour will be $55.00 per person and payment should be made out to: Joseph Mato CNE 2012 Be sure to include your E-Mail address so we can contact you if we need to. If you don't have E-Mail then include your phone number. Send it to: JOE MATO-CNE 2012 62 WOOD ROAD REDDING, CT. 06896 Any money that is left after expenses will be used as "seed money" for next years trip. As we did last year, we have two buses with 55 seats each. In past years we sold all seats and had a waiting list so don't wait too long to send in your reservation. Please note that any request for refunds must be received thirty (30) or more days in advance of the tour date. If you can find a replacement to take your bus seat, that's OK just let us know who it is. We have to know who to let onto the bus when the tour starts. If you can't find a replacement then we may have somebody on the waiting list to suggest but we can't refund money that has already been spent on tour expenses. |

Copake Station on a rainy day in March 1932. Heyward Cohen Collection These gasoline powered rail buses were used in place of steam trains for the last few years of passenger service. They ran to Poughkeepsie in the morning and returned in the afternoon. Rail Bus #9020 was a Brill car built in 1925 that had a 120 hp gasoline engine and a manual transmission similar to trucks. Service was discontinued by the NH RR in September 1933. Copake, New York Railroad Station (abandoned Central New England) . "Copake was once the land of rural trains" Written by DOUGLAS GOODHUE Despite its sparse population, Copake was served by two different railroads at three stations: the Harlem Division of the New York Central stopped in Copake Falls and Craryville, and the Central New England served downtown Copake. |

Newburgh, Dutchess and Connecticut Railroad between Pine Plains and Millerton over Winchell Mountain.
This was the highest climb that the old steamers had to make on the line with deep rock cuts at the top. It was completed in 1871 and filled up with snow in every big winter storm. Some of the photos are from the infamous "Blizzard of 88". It is easy to see why this line was abandoned in 1925 after the CNE took over. The CNE stopped using this route in favor the longer P&E route that went around the mountain instead of over it. By 1938 all of the lines were gone.
See a picture of Brill gas car #9022 at Millerton station ready to depart for Poughkeepsie as train #917 due out at 7:50am. Photo taken prior to Apr., 1928 when this train was cut back to originate from Copake instead.
See a great story of the last freight car on CNE/ND&C spur at Millerton Dutchess Avenue in 1958 prior to line being torn up. This car and others were hauled up to the site of the former station by a truck and were returned to the NYC connection by gravity with two or three people working the brakes.
CNE trains used the most northerly route through Silvernails and Copake from the west, because the P&E route (via Ancram Lead Mines) and the ND&C route (via Shekomeko) were not taken over by the CNE until 1907. "Last Man Standing" was the Harlem Division of the New York Central. |
