| Central New England Railway (CNE) Bus Tour 2010 (January 2010 Update) |
|
Hello All - April is getting closer
We are taking reservations for the 2010 segment of the annual bus tour along various portions of the former Central New England Railway. The 2010 tour will be on Sunday April 11 (rain or shine). In the past few years we have covered almost all of the old CNE except for the Springfield branch. For 2010 we plan to go back to the east end and start over. The tentative plan is to start from Tariffville and tour the area through Griffins and Bloomfield to Hartford. We are trying to arrange a real operating, current day CNE Train for a run-by on the original CNE tracks between Hartford and Griffins. Details when we get it nailed down. Lunch will be back in Tariffville. In the afternoon we will cover the Springfield branch as far north as Agawam. This will include the infamous Montague Farm blockage and bypass which contributed to the financial downfall of the CNE. We have done a couple scouting trips already with some of the people who know the territory. We will keep you informed as details are worked out. We have reserved air conditioned buses with on board restrooms and they also have a PA system for narrating the trip. As usual, everybody will get a copy of the 2010 CNE Tour guide book. Meanwhile mark your calendar for Sunday April 11, 2010. The cost of this year's tour will again be $50.00 per person and payment should be made out to: Joseph Mato CNE 2010 Be sure to include your E-Mail address so we can contact you if we need to. If you don't have E-Mail then include your phone number and address. Send it to: JOE MATO-CNE 2010 62 WOOD ROAD REDDING, CT. 06896 We don't issue tickets. Your name on our list will get you onto the bus on tour day. Any money that is left after the expenses will be used as "seed money" for next years trip. As we did in past years, we will have two buses. In past years we sold all seats and had a waiting list so don't wait too long to send in your reservation. Please note that any request for refunds must be received thirty (30) or more days in advance of the tour date. If you can find a replacement to take your bus seat, that's OK just let us know who it is. We have to know who to let onto the bus when the tour starts. If you can't find a replacement then we may have somebody on the waiting list to suggest but we can't refund money that has already been spent on tour expenses. If you have questions, send me a note at: Brudberg@optonline.net |

This is an early heads up for those planning to join us for the 2010
segment of the annual bus tour along various portions of the former
Central New England Railway. The 2010 tour will be on Sunday
April 11 (rain or shine).
In the past few years we have covered almost all of the old CNE except for the Springfield branch. For 2010 we plan to go back to the east end and start over. The tentative plan is to tour the area between Hartford and Collinsville and include most of the Springfield branch. We should be ready to start taking reservations around September. The cost of this year's tour will again be $50.00 per person and payment should be made out to: Joseph Mato CNE 2010 Be sure to include your E-Mail address so we can contact you if we need to. On November 16 we had a very productive CNE scouting run starting from the Cracker Barrel Pub in Tariffville CT. The local "experts" who contributed were: Karl Stieg Bill Curtiss George Ford Ed Hoostowski Lee Beaujon Joe and Rose Mato Pete McLachlan We scouted and timed the route from Tariffville through Griffins, Cottage Grove and Bloomfield to Hartford. After lunch back in Tariffville, we did the same for the Springfield Branch through the infamous Montague farm cut off, East Granby, West Suffield, Feeding Hills and Agawam to the remaining bridge piers over the Westfield River in Robinson Park. We also made arrangements for lunch at the Cracker Barrel. In addition we swapped a number of photos for the guide book and located sources for more photos and stories. All in all it was a very productive planning day and the weather turned out great. Bernie Rudberg |

We have already started exploring routing and transportation options for next years tour. Most of you are probably aware that we were forced to use school buses for the last tour. Reservations were slow and we simply did not have enough money in the bank to pay for the bigger buses. This did have a bright side however. The smaller lower buses allowed us to go under several low bridges and stay closer to the rail lines. We are looking into several different options on bus facilities and pricing which could allow better transportation for future tours while keeping the cost down in a reasonable range.
To date we have pretty much covered the CNE from Hartford to Maybrook except for some short branches. The opinions we heard from a number of our regular railfans was that we should start over at the east end where it all began 8 years ago. To that end, we have done one scouting trip with Joe and Rose Mato, Karl Steig, Bill Curtiss, Mike Richards and George Ford. We explored the Springfield branch from Tariffville to Agawam and discussed possible routing from Hartford west to Winsted. This is a good beginning toward organizing next years tour. We will continue the research and collect photos etc and eventually arrive at a firm plan. Meanwhile if you have any photos and/or stories to share about that area just let us know. I still have my copies of the two previous tours done by Phil Lechak to use as a base for updating. I will keep you posted on any new developments. There is a bit of news about the big Poughkeepsie bridge which was on our 2008 tour. The Walkway group has scheduled the grand opening for the weekend of October 3 and 4. There will be a big celebration including the governor and many prominent guests. This will be in conjunction with the 400 year celebration of Henry Hudson sailing up the river and the 200 years celebration of Fulton's steamboat sailing on the river. In conjunction with the list of events, Marist College has been collecting railroad and bridge history for the archives. I was invited to do some video for that project and part of that video is now on the internet. About 6 minutes of my video is in the construction section of the web site. You can check it out here. http://www.albany.edu/~pc171142/ You can find more information about the bridge and the celebration at the Walkway web site. http://www.walkway.org/ More later Bernie Rudberg |

| Here are a few scenes from the CNE RR Train Ride from Hartford to Griffins CT Saturday. We had perfect weather and the ride was great. Yours truly got to ride in the engine cab. Parts of the trip were at a slow "rock and roll" pace over original CNE rails more than 100 years old. The wavy rails are original CNE 79 pound rail from about 1898. Thank you Bernie Rudberg. The turnaround point for the trip was the home base of the currently operating incarnation of the CNE. Our thanks and a round of applause for A. J. Belliveau and his crew for a great ride with great service. |
