Rudberg Research Collection of the Central New England Railway. Dates: 2002-2011.
Dates: 2002-2010. Quantity: .75 linear feet. Abstract: The collection consists of tour guidebooks compiled by Bernard L. Rudberg of photocopies of photographs, maps, correspondence, and documents related to the history of the Central New England Railway, which ran from Maybrook, New York, to Hartford, Connecticut, in the period between 1898 and 1927, at which point it was taken over by the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. Mr. Rudberg creates the books for the participants of an annual guided bus tour he coordinates, in April or May of each year beginning in 2002, that follows portions of the old railway line, and provides information about the towns on the route, train wrecks that occurred, old carbarns, turntables and roundhouses, and such features as the Poughkeepsie River Bridge. |

CNE Tour 2007
Our CNE Railway historical tour on Saturday 14 April lucked out with good weather. The rains held off until Sunday. The tour started at a park and ride lot in Beacon with coffee and muffins. The 91 passengers on two buses left at 9:00 AM. First on the itinerary was Fishkill Landing which is now the Metro North Beacon station. Our narrators told the story of the train car ferries that hauled freight across the Hudson River before the big bridge was built in Poughkeepsie. The rail yard and ferries are long gone and the land is being developed into a hotel and conference center. Next was Wicopee Junction and Matteawan which was the headquarters of the ND&C RR and later became part of the CNE Rwy. From there we toured through Glenham, Fishkill and Brinckerhoff to Hopewell Junction. At Hopewell the riders had a chance to stretch their legs and look over the restoration work on the Hopewell Junction Depot. (more muffins and coffee) Traveling north on route 82 we looked at Arthursburg and the LaGrange station which is now a private home. Next was Billings, Moores Mills, Verbank and Oak Summit. In Millbrook we saw the first RR headquarters building that is now a bank. We stopped to look over the stone abutments of the Bangall trestle. Lunch was at Lia's restaurant in Pine Plains. The attached photo is the group about to get back on the buses after lunch. The photo is by Mark Kolodny who is a regular photographer on our CNE tours. Those of you who were on the tour will remember him as the guy with the camera and an orange hat. We recruited one of the bus drivers to take the shot so Mark could be in the picture. He is kneeling in the center. On the return trip we stopped at Stissing Junction, McIntyre and the Agway in Millbrook. One remaining RR building is now part of the Agway storage yard. From the comments I heard it seems that our railfans had a good time. I know I did. I think I can speak for the other organizers, Lee Beaujon, Jack Swanberg and of course the muffin hauling scouts Joe Mato and his wife Rose, when I say that running these tours is a lot of work but it is also a lot of fun. Hope to see you on the tour next year. Bernie Rudberg |

CNE Tour 2007
This is to advise one and all that the 2007 segment of the annual bus tours along various portions of the former Central New England Railway is ready to accept reservations. We are pleased that these tours are co-sponsored by the Maybrook Railroad Historical Society. This year's tour will be run on Saturday, April 14th (rain or shine). We will depart from the park and ride lot adjacent to the Renegades baseball stadium off route 9D in Beacon, NY. This location is about a mile north of I84 and the Beacon, Newburgh bridge intersection. Just drive north on route 9D for about a mile and turn right into the entrance for the baseball stadium. The park and ride lot is on the right next to the stadium parking lot. If you need more detailed directions or a map send me a note at: BRudberg@optonline.net For those of you who would like to arrive by rail, we will be near the Beacon train station and can arrange a pickup. Routing for this year's tour will essentially follow the route of the former ND&C RR which later became part of the CNE and the New Haven. Part of this route still has tracks and is owned by MTA Metro-North RR. As usual, everybody will get a copy of the 2007 CNE Tour guide book. We have a lot of ground to cover so we will have coffee and busses will roll at 9:00 AM. Some of the high points will be the site of the former CNE station and yard at Fishkill Landing. This was the site of the train car ferry service crossing the Hudson River before the big RR bridge in Poughkeepsie was built. It was also the connection with the NY Central Hudson River line. Just south of Fishkill Landing is Dutchess Junction which was the earlier train ferry service of the Dutchess & Columbia RR and the ND&C RR. Dutchess Junction was a thriving RR town in the late 1800's but there is nothing left but a few bricks. We will also see Wicoppee Junction and Matteawan where the station is now a beauty and tanning salon. From there we will drive through Glenham, Fishkill and Brinckerhoff to Hopewell Junction. At Hopewell we will take a look at progress in restoring the depot which is at the crossing of the ND&C and the Maybrook line. In LaGrange we will look at the former station which is now a private home. Farther north we will see the former RR freight house and the headquarters building in Millbrook which is now a bank. Depending on timing, we will head for Pine Plains for lunch at Lia's restaurant. Those of you who were on board last year will remember Lia's lunch. On the way back we plan to see Stissing Junction. If we have time we will drive by the Stanfordville station (now a residence) and maybe the creamery site. If we get all this in, we will be ready to head back to Beacon. This routing is subject to change if we run into any last minute problems or find a new way to get the busses into a small space. Due to the narrow roads and lack of suitable parking in much of the general area of our tour, some locations can only be shown from the bus windows or in photos. We will show you as much as we possibly can. At the end of the tour our buses will run express back to the parking lot in Beacon. The cost of this year's tour will be $50.00 per person and payment should be made out to "MRHS-CNE 2007" or Maybrook RR Historical Society - CNE 2007 Send it to: CNE 2007 -JOE MATO 62 WOOD ROAD REDDING, CT. 06896 We have two buses with 49 seats each. Last year we sold all seats and had a waiting list so don't wait too long to send in your reservation. Please note that any request for refunds must be received thirty (30) or more days in advance of the tour date. If you can find a replacement to take your bus seat, that's OK just let us know who it is. If you can't find a replacement then we may have somebody on the waiting list to suggest but we can't refund money that has already been spent on tour expenses |

CNE Tour 2007
On Monday 11 November our intrepid CNE Tour planning group made a scouting run of the 2007 CNE Historical Tour. On hand were Lee Beaujon, Jack Swanberg, Ed Hoostowski, Joe Mato and his wife Rose with yours truly as van driver. In April we will explore the section of the CNE that once was the ND&C RR. The plan is to start from the transportation park and ride lot by the baseball stadium off route 9D in Beacon, NY. This lot is about a mile north of Interstate 84 on 9D right next to the baseball stadium parking lot. It is about a mile from the end of the Beacon Newburgh Bridge. From there we will go to Fishkill landing where the Newburgh train car ferry was built on fill land before the big bridge in Poughkeepsie was built. Fishkill Landing was also the yard and interchange where the CNE met the Hudson Line of the NY Central RR. We will follow the old route of the ND&C RR through Matteawan (Beacon) where the old CNE headquarters building is still in use for apartments and a nail salon. Next will be Fishkill then Hopewell Junction where we will see the restoration work on the Hopewell Depot and the remains of the Maybrook Line which is being paved for a rail trail. Following the ND&C northward we will see LaGrange, Millbrook, Bangall, McIntyre, Stissing Junction and parts of Pine Plains. Most likely we will stop for lunch at Lias Restaurant in Pine Plains as we have done for the past few trips. We still have more planning and scouting to do but this is the general idea. We will have smaller buses this time to avoid some of the bridge and low wire problems of the last tour. The down side is that we will not have as many seats this time. The tentative plan is try the tour on a Saturday this time and see how it works out. Most likely it will be on 14 April. Keep this date open and we will send out better information when things start coming together. Bernie Rudberg |

| Photo above is the former ND&C section house from Stissing Junction. Following a tip from Don Fegan, we found it in the back yard of a home on Attlebury Hill Road a few miles south of Pine Plains. It still has the original gingerbread trim along the roof line. That section of the railroad was abandoned and torn out in 1938. |
